Livestock mortalities, whether large or small animals or birds, can be composted successfully.  Indeed, the results are remarkable—no bones, feathers—just great compost. 

You will like the In-Vessel system of composting, because it takes very low horse power to turn the vessel.  There is no added heat required, and the vessel does not need to be in a building—it will work in cold temperatures no problem.   One man can operate this system, and the land requirement is very low as well.   Plus, with on-farm composting the in-vessel way, you will be better able to:

• Manage Nutrients (compost has a nutrient rating of about Triple 2)
• Control Odors (your compost will be odorless)
• Reduce volume of waste/manure by about 35%

It just makes sense to use compost as bedding.  Remember, the compost is pathogen free, so your herd health and comfort are all taken care of. 

Typically, bedding requires 30% of the total compost production from a dairy farm, in other words, there is 70% remainder that you can use as a soil amendment on crop fields.  If you wish, you can sell the compost and add revenue to your farming operation.
