Doug Young, partner of Spruce Haven Farms of Central New York, decided that he had had enough of dealing with all the problems, machinery wear etc. of bedding with sand.

Worse yet, with a 1500 cow herd, the costs of bedding with sand was astronomical and climbing. He knew it was possible to bed with compost made from dewatered cow manure, but he also new his herd health, milk production, and cow comfort were vital to his continued success. After much research and consideration, Mr. Young chose the in-vessel, rotating drum composter of X-Act Systems to
provide the consistently high- quality compost needed to meet his needs.
This past winter the X-Act System 10’ x 32’ long composter was installed along with in-feed and out-feed conveyors. The installation took just a couple of days, and the only thing Spruce Haven Farms had to provide for the neat installation was the cement pad and electricity. Because the unit is insulated, it sits outside—which meant no added building costs.

Out with the sand bedding
and
all the problems that go along with it…
oh, yeah! |
Compost goes into the stalls…
ready to bed the herd, or sell,
or use as a great soil amendment,
or erosion control...
the uses are endless.

After 4 days in the vessel, the compost was tested independently by A & L Labs with the certifiable results being:
Fecal Coliform: 20 MPG/g dry (Well below the US EPA accepted standard for pathogen-free product which is 1000 MPG/g dry. Note the raw manure tested out at 5190 MPG/g dry)
